 The Dirty Dozen was a massive commercial success. Produced on a budget of $5.4 million, it grossed $45.3 million, earning domestic rentals of $24.2 million in North America. Film yang disutradarai Moustapha Akkad ini di produksi on location di Maroko dan di Libia, pembuatan The Message mengambil waktu satu tahun. Film ini dibintangi aktor terkenal Anthony Quinn dari Hollywood yang berperan sebagai Hamzah, dan juga bintang film2 lainnya.
Berdasarkan kepercayaan Islam, sosok Nabi Muhammad tidak diperlihatkan di film ini.
